Fast Implementation of FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 and PROFIBUS PA Field Devices

The Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 is designed for a fast and cost-effective fieldbus implementation in combination with the required firmware. A single hardware platform allows implementing FOUNDATIONTM fieldbus H1 (FF) and PROFIBUS PA (PA) instruments. The small footprint as well as the universal hardware are the main arguments in favor of the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2.

Fast Implementation

The Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 offers a fast implementation path to FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 or PROFIBUS PA instruments. This approach is made possible by a proven hardware used in thousands of field devices together with a fully tested protocol stack, which has been specifically developed for this platform. Thus, only the hardware integration needs to be implemented. As a result, the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 combined with Softing's firmware provides the fastest possible fieldbus implementation.

Cost Reduction by Universal Piggyback Solution

With its small footprint, the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 can be used for a FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 or PROFIBUS PA implementation for the majority of process equipment available in the market today. An expensive new development can thus be avoided. Designed as a piggyback to the main board, the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 is available in several versions. These include the standard version, a conformal coated version, and a version with a solder connection. In addition, a version with ATEX, FM and IECEx certification for use in explosive environments is available.

Investment Protection by Hardware and Software Maintenance

The Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 not only meets the requirements of the Physical Layer Test as well as the Conformance Test of the Fieldbus Foundation, but is also compliant with the PROFIBUS PA specifications. Thus, some main certification prerequisites are already covered by this product. In addition, Softing ensures the long-term usability of the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 by continuously maintaining the hardware as well as the additional software.
By using the same hardware together with the appropriate software (either FF or PA), the Fieldbus Kit FBK-2 allows the implementation of two different products with a single development.

Easy and Rapid Implementation of a FOUNDATION™ fieldbus or PROFIBUS PA Prototype 

The FBK-2 Evaluation Kit includes the required hardware and software for generating a FOUNDATION fieldbus (FF) H1 respectively a PROFIBUS PA (PA) communication interface for HART transmitters. It is designed for ease-of-use and requires no programming. Despite restricted communication capabilities, the resulting prototype qualifies for further evaluations.

Easy and Rapid Prototyping of Fieldbus Interface

The FBK-2 Evaluation Kit allows turning any HART transmitter into a FF H1 or PA field device prototype by mapping a limited set of HART Universal Commands including the process value to the appropriate fieldbus block parameters. This facilitates the fast integration of an existing HART transmitter into a fieldbus network for evaluation purposes. The implementation does not require any programming, but is accomplished through configuration only. The interface prototype can serve as a proof-of-concept of the created FF respectively PA communication capabilities and as a platform for gathering the required experience regarding a full fieldbus implementation.

Ideal Basis for Full Fieldbus Implemention

The FBK-2 Evaluation Kit is based on the hardware and software of Softing’s FBK-2 product, representing an ideal platform for developing a fully functional FF and PA communication interface for a field device. The footprint of the FBK-2 hardware is small enough to fit into the housing of most existing field devices. Furthermore, the FBK-2 is a field-proven product, which is already in use in numerous registered FF and PA field devices. Thus, once an evaluation has been performed based on the FBK-2 Evaluation Kit, only minor steps are required to develop a complete field device.

Direct Usage in Applications without Specific Preventive Measures

The hardware of the FBK-2 Evaluation Kit is delivered within a plastic housing. This way the chance of direct contact with the hardware is eliminated and it is protected against electro-static discharge. As a result, the generated FF H1 respectively PA interface prototype can be used directly within a  fieldbus laboratory network without requiring any additional electro-static measures.

FBK-2 evaluation kits are available for generating an FF and PA interface prototype.

Easy Setup of FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1 Network

The FF Starter Kit includes all hardware and software components necessary to setup, configure, and monitor an FF H1 network. It is mainly based on Softing’s successful FF products and includes a Linking Device, a sample FF H1 field device with interactive simulation capabilities, a Windows-based configuration tool, a power conditioner, cables, as well as detailed documentation. This stand alone Starter Kit has been designed with ease-of-use in mind and does not require any development or other time-consuming preparation work.

Becoming Familiar with FOUNDATION Fieldbus

The plug-and-play FF Starter Kit allows evaluating and learning FF technology. Users of this solution are enabled to gain practical experience in planning, configuring, setting up, running and maintaining a network. In addition to learning purposes, the Starter Kit can be used for demonstrations and showroom applications. 

Test Environment for Device Development

The FF Starter Kit is moreover designed for laboratory and development use and enables users to carry out FF H1 field device tests. The included Linking Device provides access via FF High Speed Ethernet (HSE) to up to 4 segments with up to 16 devices each. Process values can be monitored and individual network situations can be tested by using the FF H1 field device simulation capabilities.
