Overview
EtherNet/IP was introduced in 2001, and today is the most developed, stable and comprehensive Ethernet network solution available for factory automation. EtherNet/IP is a member of a network family that implements the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP) as its upper layers. CIP provides a comprehensive set of of messages and services for a variety of factory automation applications, including control, safety, synchronization, motion control, configuration, and information gathering. As a media-independent protocol that is supported by hundreds of vendors around the world, CIP offers its users a unified communication architecture throughout the automated factory.
